According to the Campaign for the Defense of Political and Civil Prisoners, Alireza Varasteh was arrested at his father’s home in October 2017 and is sentenced to 10 years in prison. He is in critical condition in Kashan Prison. The 23-year-old student activist was expelled from the Tarbiat Moalem Kashan University for his activism and was currently student at the Tarbiat Moalem Pardis Karaj University.
He has been denied medical care and access to medical facilities. Varasteh is in critical condition. He is denied care despite the documents issued by the authorities on his health condition and approval of the medical commission for for him to be treated in a medical facility.
Alireza Varasteh had previously been banned from attending university of Kashan by the Disciplinary Committee of the University because of political activitism and speeches he gave at the University of Tarbiat Moalem University’s Karaj Campus criticizing the Iranian Guardian Council.
Alireza Varasteh was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment in the Revolutionary Courts of the Kashan on the basis of Articles 500, 501 and 514 of the Islamic Penal Code on charges of sending secrets and decisions about the policies of the country to the others. He was sentenced to an additional 1 year imprisonment for charges of advertising activities in favor of the opposition group. He was sentenced to 2 more years imprisonment for insulting Imam Khomeini the leader and founder of the Islamic Regime. It was said that his parents were prevented from attending any of the hearings and all stages of the trial.
According to the medical report Alireza Varasteh needs to be admitted to a hospital outside the prison but his case investigator has prevented this transfer. His lawyer Hamid Rauofinah, emphasized that the spy charges that his client was given are completely baseless and they will appeal the verdict.
